Social Media: Listening is the First Step

Description: Do you know what others are saying about your coalition? What your reputation is across media outlets in your area? Conversations happen in all kinds of places and you can, and should, track what's being said and who's saying it. This interactive workshop will look at some of the ways you can listen to what your members, stakeholders, the media and the community at large are saying-through RSS feeds (Really Simple Syndication), e-mail alerts and other tools that bring up-to-the minute information to you.

Learning objectives: (1) Understand the importance of listening as a first step in your social media strategy; (2) Assign staff listeners and determine how they will report their findings; (3) Know where to listen on the Web and identify key words that will help your coalition listen; (4) Incorporate e-mail alerts and RSS feeds into planning and implementation strategies; (5)Conduct ego searches and persistent searches using keywords

Beyond Brochures: Underage Drinking Prevention in Cyberspace

Description: SAMHSA CSAP has vigorously sought to adapt to the rapidly changing communications landscape. It has moved beyond traditional underage drinking prevention print products to digital and online tools and resources to inform and serve a national network of prevention forces. CSAP develops, maintains and promotes a variety of targeted Web sites, Internet-based information delivery systems, Web-based multimedia, databases, interactive games for youth, touch-screen technology and other electronic tools and resources. Its widespread underage drinking prevention efforts, specifically Town Hall Meetings (THMs) and Reach Out Now Teach-Ins, feature online technologies such as interactive maps, online registration and message boards. The workshop will show how these tools are supporting The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking and will review the challenges and benefits of establishing a sustainable national underage drinking prevention effort through cyberspace technology.

Learning objectives: (1) Understand the challenges in preventing underage drinking and the need for continuing efforts; (2) Become familiar with Federal online resources available to support community-based underage drinking prevention activities; (3) Find out about ways to keep communications lines open and to build momentum for the future; (4) Learn how to locate evidence-based prevention strategies, downloadable materials, and other resources to address specific community underage alcohol use situations.

CONNECT: Facebook for Community Coalitions

Description: Do you want to connect with youth? Do you want to build collaboration within your community? Do you want a variety of user-friendly tools to promote health messaging and prevention at the local, regional, and national level? Do you want to be current? CONNECT is an interactive workshop that will teach you how to use today's social media tools to help your coalition get more exposure, connect with more community members and get your message heard. In addition to gaining new contacts and outreach tools, CONNECT will show you how to utilize social media to stay in contact, plan events, update your staff, volunteers and other coalitions on what is going on NOW within your organization.

Learning objectives: (1) Be able to define social networking, and have a basic understanding of the workings and potential of Facebook; (2) Have a basic understanding of how to select the best tool for culturally appropriate messaging with a specific target audience; (3) Learn how and when to use privacy tools to control and administrate the content of different social media tools; (4) Learn how to set up accounts on multiple platforms; (5) Learn how to promote your new social media tools; (6) Learn how to use analytics to track and evaluate your networking and messaging; (7) See real-life examples to model and learn from; (8) Provide an opportunity to discuss potential application to attendees own programs.

Developing Your Coalition's Media Plan

Description: Coalitions have great stories to tell about how they bring together residents, businesspeople, faith leaders, school officials and others to solve community problems. And those stories can raise awareness, increase interest and support and help to mobilize the community. But where do you start when it comes to developing a comprehensive communication strategy? This workshop will highlight the latest publication in the CADCA National Coalition Institute's Beyond the Basics Series-Telling the Coalition Story: Comprehensive Communication Strategies. The publication and workshop are designed to assist coalitions in developing a comprehensive strategy for working with traditional media outlets, incorporating new/social media and taking advantage of partners' dissemination opportunities, such as business newsletters and Web sites, posters and school calendars. The session will outline development of a marketing/communication plan using the elements of SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF).

Learning objectives: (1) Develop good relationships with local media; (2) Use the SPF to develop a comprehensive marketing/communication plan that ensures cultural competence; (3) Determine which new/social media are appropriate choices for their coalition and how to get started; (4) Identify media advocacy and social marketing campaigns and know when to incorporate them into a comprehensive marketing/communications plan.

Getting Your Message Out! Tips for Advancing Your Mission Through Science-Based Communications and Marketing Approaches

Description: The pathway to successful marketing begins with listening to and hearing what your customer wants and needs. During this session, we'll share information about how we are currently reaching out to our grantees and other constituency groups to provide the latest information on prevention, early intervention, treatment and recovery support services. Most importantly, we want to hear your ideas for how SAMHSA can help you get the word out about services your program provides and accomplishments achieved in your community. Media Detective: A New NIDA-Funded Media Literacy Substance Abuse Prevention Program

Description: This workshop will introduce the theory and practice of media literacy education interventions that are designed to prevent substance abuse in youth. Media Detective, a new NIDA-funded evidence-based media literacy curriculum for the prevention of alcohol and tobacco use in elementary school children, will be described. Activities from this curriculum will be demonstrated.

Learning objectives: (1) Understanding the pervasiveness of positive media messages about substances that are targeted at youth; (2) Understand the influence of media on the decision to use alcohol and tobacco in children and adolescents; (3) Describe how media literacy education can combat dangerous positive media messages about ATOD; (4) Describe the Media Detective program and its key findings

Twitter for Coalitions: Did You Tweet Today?

Description: Twitter is popping up everywhere. What is it? What can coalitions do with it? Twitter, as a communications tool, has caught on like wildfire, connecting people down the hall and a world away. Twitter brings us together with the people we care about and want to network with using any or all of three methods -- the Twitter Web site, a free desktop tool or your mobile phone. This workshop will explore the basics of twitter, share stories of those using it and demonstrate how it works live in real time

Learning objectives: (1) Describe what Twitter is and how it works, (2) Outline how to get started, (3) Identify tools to get the most from Twitter, (4) Integrate Twitter with other communications strategies, (5) Develop a plan to use Twitter to listen, share and amplify.

Empowering Parents/Underage Drinking Prevention Campaign

Description: This workshop is designed to share the newest phase of the Ad Council and SAMHSA’s
Underage Drinking Prevention campaign, including PSAs and Web site fulfillment. The new
interactive website provides parents with resources including stats about teens and alcohol
consumption, and tips that help parents initiate conversations with their children about not
drinking underage.

Are You Ready for Web-based Meetings and Events?

Description: How often do you have the opportunity to participate in online meetings, workshops or webinars? How much time, productivity and money could you save by hosting meetings and events on the Web? Findings from the NW Kansas Regional Prevention Center indicate a savings of nearly $10,000 from just one online workshop. With ever tightening travel budgets the need for hosting and participating in Web-based meetings, training events and conferences has become a critical component for continued learning/training. This workshop will demonstrate three platforms providing an opportunity for participants to see each one in action. Special guests will join us from a distance. Bring your laptop for a hands-on experience.

Learning objectives: (1) Experience three online meeting/event platforms demonstrated and become familiar with the benefits and limitations of each; (2) Hear how other coalitions are using Web-based tools to further coalition goals; (3) Analyze each platform in the context of your local community needs and possibilities; (4) Identify no-, low- and moderate-cost platforms for your potential local use

Description: CADCA and NIAAA are currently developing multimedia tools for coalitions based on NIAAA’s research-based underage drinking messages and products. This presentation will highlight the progress made thus far and the preliminary product plans. It also will seek input from coalition members on the types of tools and topics they need most. This session offers and unprecedented opportunity for participants to share their perspectives and help shape future multimedia products provided by CADCA to their coalitions.
