Video Voice Project: Making Testimonials

Description: Youth participating in the Summit for Youth Leaders! track will have the opportunity to contribute to the Video Voice Project. The production team will capture youth testimonials and footage that will be edited and included in the final product.

The Courage to Speak® - Conspiracy of Silence™

Description: Ginger Katz, is helping children and parents across the nation to end the Conspiracy of Silence™ surrounding drug abuse. Children and teens communicate more today than ever before—through texting, emailing and gossip. But when it comes to what torments them and how they self medicate that pain with drugs and alcohol….Silence. That “Conspiracy of Silence™” is killing our friends and children. They need the “Courage to Speak.” Ginger shows audiences how to avoid the heartache she suffered when drugs took her son Ian’s life when he was just 20 years old. Since then, she has developed curriculum and reached over a million people across the country telling Ian’s story and speaking honestly about how silence fed her son’s addiction. Ginger’s programs helps parents and children discover “the courage to speak.”

Learning objectives: (1) The impact of drug use and addiction on youth and their families; (2) The "Conspiracy of Silence™" around drug use and how having the courage to speak can save the lives of friends and family; (3) Resources and strategies for breaking through silence and denial to encourage open communication and empower youth to live drug- free

Telling the Story: Creative Avenues for Youth Engagement

Description: Every community has a story to be told, both good and bad, however, how we communicate that story will determine our ability to engage people in an alternative narrative of change. This workshop will explore avenues for youth to engage their community in the process of creatively identifying and addressing community issues. Participants will be exposed to examples of youth coalition work and have the opportunity to experience innovative ways to use various forms of media to tell the story of their community and increase their capacity to affect change.

Presentation Skills for Youth Advocates

Description: This highly interactive, youth-taught workshop teaches participants the core elements that make up a good presentation, with a focus on voice control, animation and basic presentation skills. Students are taught to identify common errors in presentations and how to coach each other to correct them. Students are shown how to practice core presenting skills through various exercises. Once workshop attendees have the basic instruction, students in this workshop apply the principles and skills they have learned to a variety of scripts from simple theatrical skits and radio PSAs. The class is broken down into several smaller groups for this purpose and will perform their skit or assignment to each other at the end of the workshop. This workshop is ideally suited to anyone who wants to improve their public speaking skills, whether they have speaking experience or none at all. In fact, if the idea of speaking to an audience makes you nervous, this is exactly the workshop for you! Presented by youth advocates from Dover (NH) Youth to Youth.

Learning objectives: (1) Describe 3 core areas where a presenter should focus their attention to improve their presentation; (2) List 5 techniques for animating your voice; (3) Attendees demonstrate 2-4 techniques shown them in a sample of an actual prevention skit or Public Service Announcement.

Youth Give Back

Description: This intermediate workshop is designed to help youth and youth leaders to gain new techniques for engaging youth and letting youth take the lead on prevention projects. An emphasis will be on changing community norms by highlighting all of the positive contributions that youth make to our communities and supporting youth in making positive choices.

Learning objectives: (1) Learn creative and effective methods for engaging youth in prevention activities including environmental strategies, community programs and youth events; (2) Learn creative and effective methods for engaging multiple community sectors in youth related events and activities including businesses, media, schools, law enforcement, community service organizations, parents, health care, local universities and youth serving organizations; (3) Learn cost effective and low cost methods of disseminating prevention messages that are initiated by youth and providing youth activities

Say it Loud and Clear!

Description: Say it loud and clear: Engaging coalitions and non-profits with practical tools and insights in the creation of effective communication strategies. This workshop is geared towards students, young adults, coalition leaders and nonprofit organization outreach personnel. The communication landscape across America is changing by leaps and bounds. Traditional print, radio and television media outlets are undergoing major metemorphis. Organizations need to become fluent with 21st century communication techniques and methodology. The goal of the workshop "Say it loud and clear" will be to spark interest in the various forms of new media which enable organizations opportunities to reach target audiences with clear and concise messages. We'll delve into and create understanding about new Internet technologies that enable cost effective communication techniques and methods. This workshop will provide powerful insights for coalitions and non-profit organizations who struggle with the inability to produce effective media content due to cost constraints and personnel. The attendees will leave empowered to build communication strategies that will assist in fundraising and other coalition building efforts.

Learning objectives: (1) Understand who your audience is and best practices for reaching that demographic; (2) Move toward greater understanding of new media and its effective use; (3) Build motivation toward creating communication campaigns that will spur organizational growth and assist fundraising efforts
